me

I was born in San Francisco, California. I first became aware of darkroom photography as a Cub Scout. I started by doing contact prints in my bathroom. In the eighth grade I traveled with the San Mateo Junior museum to Twenty Nine Palms and Joshua Tree National Monument. There I used my parents Nikkromat camera to photograph flowers and landscapes. I purchased a Nikon FM when I was 25 and started shooting all the time. I did my own film developing and printing in a section of my garage with black plastic walls and no ventilation. I had a room built in my garage with ventilation, this was a major improvement. I attended Skyline Junior College and studied photography. My instructor Mr. DeMartelli asked me not to return after my first semester. He suggested that I was wasting my time and should attend the Academy of Art College. I graduated in 1984 with a BFA in photography. I set up a studio in San Mateo, California and closed it in six months. I started to work at The New Lab in San Francisco and was the Technical manager there for nineteen years. I was able to see millions of images, meet the worlds best photographers, Fuji and Kodak executives, saw the expansion of Chrome films and their demise. I moved to Tucson, Arizona in 2005 and worked on several series of Infrared photography. I currently teach photography at Sahuaro High School.
